MPO teachers in Shahbagh block over 3-point demands

Teachers affiliated with private MPOs are staging a blockade in the capital’s Shahbagh demanding the implementation of the notification for 20 percent rent, Tk 1,500 medical allowance, and 75 percent festival allowance for employees. On Wednesday around 2 pm, teachers who took up positions from the Central Shaheed Minar to Shahbagh blocked all traffic at the intersection.

The teachers said they will not teach in any classroom until their demands are met and will continue their agitation. Their sit-in program began at the Central Shaheed Minar this morning. They held a March to the Secretariat last Tuesday.

On September 30, the government increased the rent of teachers and employees under MPO by Tk 500; however, after the announcement on October 5, the teachers rejected it and called for a protest. Then, on October 6, the Ministry of Education sent a proposal to the Finance Department, asking for the rent to be increased by at least two to three thousand taka.

Currently, teachers and employees under MPO are receiving a monthly medical allowance of Tk 500 and a house rent allowance of Tk 1,500 under the national pay scale. Earlier, two festival allowances were given annually at the rate of 25 percent of the basic salary, which has recently been increased to 50 percent.

In this situation, class activities have come to a standstill in various areas of the country, as teaching has been suspended in all private MPO-affiliated educational institutions in the country.
